Light, crispy chicken tossed in a sweet hoisin-soy sauce!
I am no stranger to posting a recipe every once in a while that isn't necessarily one I like because I have made it for my family and they liked it. This is one of those recipes. Nick loves General Tso's chicken and I've been trying to find a recipe that I like, but coincidentally (but not really at all), most of the recipes taste the same. I like Asian foods and I love hoisin especially, but I'm not a huge fan of this recipe. I don't by any means hate it, but I wouldn't choose to eat it. However, it gets posted on my blog because it's a solid recipe that my husband loves and my blog is my recipe box. :) I hope that this brings a little joy to someone who was looking for a good General Tso's recipe and that you love it as much as Nick does! What you need:
For the Chicken:
- 1 1/2 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch pieces
- 2 eggs, lightly beaten
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- Vegetable oil for frying
- 2 tsp. sesame seeds
- 2 Tbsp. green onions
For the Sauce:
- 2 tsp. vegetable oil
- 2 tsp. minced garlic cloves
- 1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
- 3/4 cup chicken broth
- 2 Tbsp. hoisin sauce
- 2 Tbsp. brown sugar
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp. cornstarch
Directions:
- Place eggs in a bowl and add salt and pepper.
- On a plate, mix together flour and corn starch.
- Heat 3 inches of oil in a deep pot to 350 degrees.
- Dip chicken into eggs, then flour mixture.
- Fry no more than a dozen pieces at a time. Fry until browned about 5 minutes.
- Repeat with remaining chicken.
- Meanwhile, make the sauce by heating 2 tsp. vegetable oil over medium heat in a saucepan.
- Add garlic and red pepper flakes and cook for 30 seconds.
- Whisk together broth, hoisin, brown sugar soy sauce, and cornstarch.
- Add to pan and bring to a simmer. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes or until sauce thickens.
- Add chicken to pan with sauce and toss to coat. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and green onions.
