A&W Chili Dogs Copycat

Grab a root beer and enjoy this classic chili dog copycat from A&W restaurants!

I am no stranger to A&W restaurants but I have never had one of their chili dogs. So I'm not sure exactly how this chili dog copycat compares to the real thing and I'm not entirely opposed to traveling to our nearest one in Sevierville to test out the real thing. I can say, without question, that this is a fabulous chili dog recipe and I really enjoyed the very classic flavors to the chili. Per the recipe, this is a Coney Island style chili.

Jalapeno Popper Hot Dogs

Amp up ordinary hot dogs with jalapeno popper ingredients for a cheesy, spicy meal!

I have had this recipe saved for entirely too long. Last year, I got a salsa kit for my Aerogarden. Unfortunately, my cherry tomatoes never sprouted (probably due to Mason taking them out and tossing them too many times), but my jalapenos flourished. I started two more plants from seeds, but they didn't grow as quickly - probably due to lack of light from my light being so far up because of the large plant. That one large jalapeno plant, however, produced enough jalapenos to feed a small army.

And oh my gosh! They were so spicy. We're pretty accustomed to spicy food in our house. I don't have as much of a tolerance as my husband, but I can still handle a little bit of heat. I don't know what it was about these jalapenos but man...they were spicier than some of the habaneros we buy at the store. Nick agreed. They were awesome in this recipe and were balanced out beautifully by the cream cheese without taking away all the heat. It's a fairly easy recipe and definitely a great way to amp up a regular ole hot dog.

For Super Bowl 2016, I decided I wanted to make something similar to Petro's (I'll link that recipe at the end of the post!) or Frito chili pies because we weren't having a get together or anything like that. I still wanted some type of a game dayesque food. I chose to try this recipe from Amy's blog and went with her garden chili recipe to top it. The chili is quite fabulous. It has red wine in it and the wine gives it such a bold, rich flavor to it. Plus tatortots and hot dogs! That's good grub!

Hot Dog Stuffed Pretzels

I DVR quite a few Food Network shows. One show that I'm always happy to watch is Big Daddy's House. Aaron McCargo Jr. always shares the best kinds of foods. I was blown away when I saw him do these hot dog stuffed pretzels. My kids love hot dogs and they are always begging for Auntie Anne pretzels at the mall, so I knew that this would be a hit with them. I used half a recipe of my favorite pizza dough and froze the other half. You'd be surprised at how much they really tasted like AA pretzels! My kids devoured these. I made 8 and my 5 year old had 3 and my 4 year old ate 2.

Chili Dogs

I made this recipe for my son's 5th birthday a few weeks ago. He is a huge hot dog lover and I am a huge chili dog lover. I figured I could make the chili for me, my husband, and my daughter. Only my husband and I ate the chili, but that's perfectly fine. I really loved this chili - it reminds me (and hubs agreed) of Skyline A LOT...and as you all may well know, we love our Skyline {Skyline Copycat, Cincinnati Chili #1, Cincinnati Chili #2}. The only thing that was really different was that it didn't have cocoa powder like Skyline does.

Oh and due to a lovely recipe {Oven Hot Dogs}, I am now a total mayo-on-hot-dogs lover! Like I needed something else to add mayonnaise to?!

(Printable Version)
What you need:
  • 4 tbsp. butter
  • 1 yellow onion, finely diced (plus some for topping)
  • 2 tbsp. chili powder
  • 2 tbsp. paprika
  • 1/2 tsp. ground allspice
  • 1/2 tsp. curry powder
  • 1 tsp. dry mustard
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • salt
  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1 1/4 cups water
  • Hot dogs
  • Hot dog buns
  • Toppings: mustard, mayo, relish, onions, cheese, etc.
Directions:

Melt butter in a large skillet with diced onion. Cook until translucent, trying not to brown the onions.

Add your spices to the onions; mix well.

Add ground beef and water, working to crumble it up as finely as possible.
Simmer for 30 to 45 minutes on medium heat, stirring occasionally.

Cook your hot dogs when chili is almost done - boil, nuke, fry, grill - choose your method!
Serve chili over hot dogs and top with your favorite toppings!

    Oven Hot Dogs

I first saw this recipe on Sunshine & Bones. I love messy foods. You know, the kind where you literally have food all over your face and hands. Because no messy food has ever been unkind to me...they are always turbo delicious. Chili dogs are the ONLY reason I will not give up the beautimous processed garbage hot dogs. There is no way I could give up chili dogs. Ever. Period. End of story.

    What you need:
    • 8 hot dogs
    • 8 hot dog buns
    • mayonnaise
    • mustard
    • 1 small onion, finely diced
    • relish, if you prefer it
    • shredded cheddar cheese
    • 1 can chili (I used with beans)
    Directions:
    1. Line a 9x13x2-inch dish with foil. Place all buns in the dish.
    2. Spread mayonnaise on each bun.
    3. Add a hot dog to each one.
    4. Top with mustard, relish, chili, onions and cheese. Cover with foil.
    5. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes.
