Loco Moco

Who needs Mickey D's when you can have this Hawaiian fast food staple at home?

Loco Moco #recipe #beef #egg #hawaii #copycat

Loco moco is a Hawaiian fast food staple and I can absolutely see why. My family loved this dish. It's a lower calorie Garbage Plate. Traditionally, this is served with the patty and egg on top of the rice all smothered in gravy. I couldn't tell you why I didn't do it that way, but that's the traditional way to do it. Very simple recipe with simple ingredients, but it's definitely not lacking in flavor at all. I especially loved the gravy - which is saying something because I usually don't like gravy. My tastebuds are growing up!

What you need:
  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. onion powder
  • 1 Tbsp. unsalted butter
  • 1 Tbsp. all purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 4 cups cooked rice
  • 4 eggs, fried or poached
Directions:
  1. In a medium bowl, mix together ground beef, salt, pepper, and onion powder just until combined.
  2. Divide meat into 4 portions and form into patties.
  3. Heat a skillet over medium heat and then cook patties until done, flipping only one time.
  4. In the same skillet, add butter. Once melted, add beef broth and heat through.
  5. Whisk in flour until thickened and golden brown, about 3 minutes. Strain through a fine mesh sieve, if desired.
  6. Divide rice into bowls. Top with patty, egg, and gravy.

Although not traditional Hawaiian food, I'm sure, this Grilled Hawaiian Teriyaki Bowl is one of my favorite "burrito" bowls ever with so much flavor packed in every bite. I think this Authentic Hawaiian Macaroni Salad from Gonna Want Seconds would be an awesome addition to any plate of Loco Moco.
