Turkey Meatloaf

A slightly healthier version of an American classic with BBQ sauce instead of ketchup on top!

So I have this ongoing debate with my husband about how traditional meatloaf has ketchup or a tomato-based sauce on top. He thinks it's gross, but I keep telling him that's how it is made. In January 2020 when he was gone for army training, I took advantage and made meatloaf the way it should be made. This one was slightly different, what with the BBQ sauce instead of ketchup, but I really liked it. Plus this has the bonus of being turkey instead of beef, so it's a lower cholesterol version of meatloaf and I love that!

What you need:

  • 1 tsp. olive oil
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 1 1/2 lb. ground turkey
  • 3/4 cup plain breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/4 cup BBQ sauce

Directions:

  1. In a small skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add onions and garlic and cook for about 3 minutes.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together turkey, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire, salt, pepper, and cooked onions.
  3. Form into a loaf and set onto a foil-lined baking sheet.
  4. Top with BBQ sauce.
  5. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for about 1 hour or until cooked through. Rest for 5 minutes before slicing.
