School Pizza Copycat

If you've ever had and loved this thicker crust (amazing) school pizza as a kid, you need this recipe!

School pizza is very polarizing in that I know some people despise and some people love it.  I will say this...I like the school pizza I had when I was in elementary school. Once I moved to Tennessee and attended middle school and high school, the pizza was not the same. Matt and Cami were not excited about this pizza because they only know Tennessee school pizza and it is not like this one. But they ate it and then told me how they would absolutely eat school pizza if it was like this AND how jealous they were that I got this at school.

What you need:

For the crust:

  • 2 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup powdered milk
  • 2 Tbsp. granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp. quick rise yeast
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 2/3 cups warm water (110ish degrees)
  • 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil

For the sauce:

  • 6 oz. tomato paste
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. pepper
  • 1/2 Tbsp. dried oregano
  • 1/2 Tbsp. dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp. dried rosemary

For the toppings:

  • 1/2 lb. ground beef
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 8 oz. shredded mozzarella cheese

Directions:

  1. Prepare a sheet pan with parchment paper - you will only need it to cover half the sheet. If you spray with nonstick cooking spray first, it will help hold the parchment paper down.
  2. For the crust: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, powdered milk, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  3. In a measuring glass, combine warm water and oil. Add to large bowl.
  4. Stir with a wooden spoon until no dry spots remain.
  5. Spread dough onto pan with fingertips until mostly even. It will take up half the pan. If it's hard to work with, let it rest for 5 minutes and then go again.
  6. Bake the crust for 8 to 10 minutes in a preheated 475 degree oven.
  7. For the toppings: Meanwhile, brown and crumble the ground beef.
  8. Mix together all the sauce ingredients - this can be done days before if you like.
  9. Top crust with sauce, meat, and cheese.
  10. Bake for 8 to 10 more minutes at 475 degrees.
  11. Remove from oven and let stand 5 minutes before slicing.

I don't really think I've made too many copycat pizza recipes, but I love this Copycat Marion's Pizza - from a pizzeria in Ohio. In my opinion, a copycat pizza deserves a copycat breadstick recipe to go with like these Copycat Pizza Hut Breadsticks from Brown Eyed Baker.
