French Vanilla Chai Cinnamon Rolls

Cake mix and chai spices make these cinnamon rolls extraordinary.

Cinnamon rolls make me so happy. I don't think I've met one I didn't like. I had these specific cinnamon rolls saved because of how much Nick loves chai. The cake mix gives a different texture to these and the chai mix instead of just cinnamon sugar made these really wintery in my opinion. Still pure comfort food but ever so different.

What you need:

For the Dough:

  • 1 3/4 cups French Vanilla cake mix
  • 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 pkg. active dry yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water

For the Filling:

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cardamom
  • 1/2 tsp. ginger
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp. ground cloves
  • 6 Tbsp. unsalted butter, softened

For the Glaze:

  • 1 1/3 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. milk
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla

Directions:

  1. For the Dough: Mix together cake mix, flour, and salt in a large bowl. Set aside.
  2. In a measuring glass or small bowl, add yeast to warm water and allow to sit for about 5 minutes.
  3. Add yeast and water to the dry ingredients and mix well.
  4. Cover with a cloth and let rise for about 1 hour.
  5. Punch down and cover. Let rise for an additional 30 minutes.
  6. For the Filling: In a small bowl, whisk together brown sugar,, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves.
  7. Add butter and mix well. Set aside.
  8. Turn out dough onto a well floured surface. Knead a few times and then roll out into a rectangle about 1/4-inch thick.
  9. Spread butter mixture evenly on top of the rectangle.
  10. Roll up rectangle starting at the bottom. Cut into 12 pieces.
  11. Place in a greased 13x9-inch baking pan. Cover and set on top of the oven while you preheat it to 350 degrees. Let rise for 20 minutes.
  12. Bake for 15 to 25 minutes until edges are golden brown. Cool for 10 minutes before adding glaze.
  13. For the Glaze: Whisk together all ingredients and drizzle over the top of the slightly cooled rolls.

It's been a while since I've shared a cinnamon roll recipe, but the last one is definitely a heavyweight and hard to beat - these Bacon Cinnamon Rolls are insanely good. I love a twist on cinnamon rolls but classic are great too and these Easy Cinnamon Rolls From Scratch from Sally's Baking Addiction look amazing.
