These burgers have thyme caramelized onions sealed between two pieces of cheese and are smothered in garlic mayo...nothing better than that!
We have burgers every other Friday (for the most part) and I love to try new recipes every now and then. I tend to stick to very traditional burgers because I am pretty particular with burgers. I like them seasoned with only salt and pepper and then the toppings add extra flavor. I'm not a fan of garlic or Worcestershire sauce in burgers even though I am a garlic-aholic. But I do make an exception on occasion. These yummy burgers do have Worcestershire in them, but a majority of the "oomph" in flavor comes from the caramelized onions and very very delicious garlic mayo. It does take a little bit of time to make because of the process of caramelizing the onions, however, it is all worth it in the end!
I slightly adapted the method of building the burger and sealed the caramelized onions in between two slices of cheese to keep them from sliding off the burger while eating. I also added bacon to ours...because bacon :)

What you need:
- 2 to 3 Tbsp. butter
- 1 yellow onion, thinly sliced into half moons
- Fresh thyme sprigs
- Salt and pepper
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- Minced garlic (to your liking)
- 1 to 2 lb. ground beef (I prefer 80/20)
- 1 to 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
- Provolone cheese
- Lettuce
- Tomato, sliced
- Bacon, cooked
- Hamburger buns
- In a small saucepan, melt butter and cook onions over low heat. Add thyme sprigs and cook onions for about an hour, stirring on occasion. Season with salt to taste. Discard thyme sprigs when done.
- Meanwhile mix together mayonnaise and garlic. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Refrigerate until ready to use.
- Mix together ground beef and Worcestershire sauce. Form into patties and then season with salt and pepper.
- Cook patties in a skillet. Add cheese after flipping. Top with caramelized onions and top with a second piece of cheese; cook until patty is cooked through and cheese has melted.
- Assemble burgers by topping bottom bun with tomato, lettuce, bacon, burger patty, and a top bun that has been smothered by garlic mayo.
It must be a trend for me to make burgers with caramelized onions and flavored mayonnaise because I also love these Italian Burgers with Roasted Tomatoes and Caramelized Onion. The burger recipe at the top of my to-make list is this Muffaletta Burger from Girls Can Grill.
