DIY Vanilla Extract

I have had this in my arsenal for entirely too long. I finally sucked it up and ordered some vanilla beans from Amazon and visited the liquor store to price the smaller bottles of alcohol. I really wanted to try rum first, but the vodka was about $5 cheaper. I will hopefully try rum very soon. For some reason, I just think the rum would produce a better vanilla extract overall. It's funny because vodka is my drink of choice when it comes to alcohol. But rum and baking kind of go hand in hand, right? It's more smooth and flavorful.

I'm hoping to do a store bought vs. homemade vanilla extract experiment soon - where I make the same thing, like cookies, but in one batch use the store bought and the other, use the homemade. I will update as soon as I do that :)

What you need:
  • Vanilla beans
  • Liquor - I used 750mL of vodka
  • A clean, airtight container to store it in
Directions:

You'll need about 8 to 10 beans per 750mL of alcohol.

Split the vanilla beans down the middle. Place into your container.
Fill with alcohol and place the lid on top.

Store in a dark place for around 2 months. Shake lightly once a week. Then you are ready to go!
